Don't be like a christian, be a christian from uncle ebo Whyte

In the 70’s one of the leading and most vibrant and powerful Christian organisations went to KNUST, Kumasi for their annual camp meeting. Some of these camp meetings were very ‘ogyacious’ that people came back home to burn their seemingly unholy clothes and even break up with their boyfriends. On the Sunday of the camp meeting, they decided to have a communion service and because there was no ordained minister in their midst, the group leader went to see the KNUST chaplain to come in and administer the communion. He was an Anglican priest. He was exceited to be called upon to serve and accepted the invitation. The rest of the camp members however where not enthused that their leader had asked an ‘Angligan priest’, an orthordox priest, who they considered not ‘ogyacious’ enough to come and give them communion. As a concession, their leader told them that if anyone felt lead not to take it, they should not take the communion from the Anglican priest.

On the day, the priest conducts the service and then gets to the communion. When he lifted the communion he said ‘I am inviting you to dine with me at the Lord’s supper. I know that some of you may not be comfortable taking communion from a man like me because eof my background. I understand. Please for your own sake, if you don’t feel convinced , please don’t do it for appearances’. Now this disarmed them so many did go for the communion. After this, he asked to pray for the leaders and all the leaders were slain by the Holy Spirit. The atmosphere in the room changed and each of them knew God had visited them. An Angligan priest that they all considered not ‘ogyacious’ enough.

They had judged him because of his appearance and concluded he wasn’t Christian enough. Christians have been trained that certain things are acceptable and others, not. And with that checklist, anyone can creep in and act the part, ticking all our acceptable boxes then we accept them wholly.

We ask do you have the right jargon; do you have the right costumes ; do you go to the right places? If you go to church, dress decently and are you able to say praise the Lord in place of good morning then you’re a Christian.

There’s a stream that looks calm and yet is very deep and can drown and there’s another that you can see it’s movement and yet it’s shallow. Christians now say the Christian is the one who’s ’movement’ can be seen and that’s dangerous.

Acting like a Christian is easy but being a Christian is the real deal. Don’t let your Christianity only be evident in how you dress, speak or where you go to church.
